This has nothing to do with me...

but it's my blog and I can do what I want.

I saw the trailer to Sucker Punch, finally and it blew me away.

It's five cute young ladies (Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish battling it out with Dragons and machines in a World War II type setting. Looks cool and is directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen). This will be his first major movie with his own original story. It's got all the potential to be a really awesome big budget B-movie with the girls, guns and monsters angle.
With that said it made me think about my own originality in my artwork. Snyder came on to the big screen by doing a remake of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", then hit a huge payday with his adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel "300". That was almost shot for shot the same as the book, but his next film was Alan Moore's classic graphic novel "Watchmen".

He caught a little flak for either being too close to the book and not being original and he caught heat for making the minor changes he did. But with Sucker Punch (due out next year) he gets to make his own call, and direct with not constraints.

Well I kinda feel like I constrain my work too much. I try to think of new and fresh ideas but it always seems to familiar. I do come up with good, deep stories for already existing properties. I've been working on an X-Men story for a few years as most of you know and I think it's solid, my family likes it and my friends like it (legitimately). Some of my closer friends have helped me edit the story so it could make more sense. I hope that I get the chance to show it to Marvel and hopefully they like it.

Even with that, seeing movies like Sucker Punch, and Chris Nolan's wonderful "Inception" (I'll review it when I see it a second time) and also reading different art magazines like Juxtapoz, make me think about being more creative and more out there with my and not be so literal all the time. With more practice and experience it shall come, and the one day I will be able see my work in the same light as some of these modern day geniuses in the art world.

Something I do to try to avoid being literal is use a lot of loose metaphors.
